As frigid winter weather streams in across the country, families are searching for ways to keep themselves warm. Using a space heater is a popular method, but there are some dangers associated with these devices. With the following tips, you can keep your family safe and warm through the entire winter.
Many older space heater models burn natural gas. These types of space heaters are not widely sold anymore due to the dangers of burning a large quantity of gas indoors. In addition to the fire risk, burning natural gas releases carbon monoxide into your home. Specific ventilation equipment is critical to disperse these deadly gasses. If you own a natural gas space heater and do not have a ventilation system installed, remove the space heater immediately!
Modern electrical space heaters can pose safety risks as well. Over half of all heating fires occur because a space heater has been improperly placed. Make sure to position all heaters a safe distance from flammable items like upholstered furniture, clothing or bedding. Be especially careful if you have small children or animals in your home, and never leave them unsupervised when a space heater is in use.
One of the most important elements of space heater safety is knowing when to use it. As tempting as it might be to have the space heater run at night or while you’re away, these practices are extremely dangerous. Only use a space heater when you are in the same room, present and awake. Additionally, do not plug the space heater into a power strip or an extension cord, as this can cause overheating in the wiring.
Of course, you should always read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper space heater placement and operation. For more space heater safety tips, follow this link to a helpful fact sheet from the National Fire Prevention Association.
